Why We Should Not Damn America

Reve' M. Pete, D. T. S.
Dr. Reve' M. Pete

We should not "damn" America because WE live here! Calling for the damnation of America is like asking for one's house to be destroyed by a hurricane or a tornado. If asked, surely Hurricane Katrina victims or tornado victims would say that having one's home destroyed is no "Hallelujah time", except when acting in faith, praising God for the restoration of it. It is unrealistic to call for the damnation of America and think that one would not be touched by it.

Recent reports concerning drinking water in major US cities have been disturbing. What if ALL drinking water in America was unsafe? Americans might be reduced to catching rainwater as it falls from the sky - and that water my also be contaminated due to air pollution. What if the food supply in America was contaminated? There have been recent incidents of contaminated spinach and peanut butter in America. What if such contamination was widespread in ALL food? These are just two examples of the possible damnation of America.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Proverbs 18:21 The "fruit" of the tongue is life or death. It is just as easy to speak life as it its to speak death.

We African-Americans ought to speak life to America more than anyone else. Why? Because we are the ones who would be the most affected by the damnation of America. We should also be the main ones to bless America. Why? Because we have the most to overcome. Jesus said, "Love your enemies" and "Bless those who curse you" (Matthew 5:44). When we look back at our history in this nation and see the injustices and inequities that have been committed against us, the ONLY way to overcome the hurt and devastation is to BLESS.

Blessing those who have wronged us is God's way of opening up an avenue to administer healing and deliverance to us. Bitterness, anger and unforgiveness are probably why we African-Americans are still not enjoying the prosperity that America is known for as much as others. We are trapped by our own negative emotions concerning injustices and inequities that have been committed against us. It is time for us to break free of our own chains by BLESSING America.

Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn out her seven pillars." Proverbs 9:1

A man will be commended according to his wisdom, but he who is of perverse heart will be despised." Proverbs 12:8

"There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health." Proverbs 12:18
